U.S.-China Naval Skirmish Signals Strained Relations

Tony Sagami | March 21, 2009

March 11, five Chinese naval ships maneuvered dangerously close to a U.S. Navy ship, the USNS Impeccable in the South China Sea. The Impeccable got close to China’s new submarine base with its sophisticated sonar/surveillance equipment. China’s aggressive response is a clear signal that it won’t take any crap from the Obama administration and a strained relationship.

Have tried every time to open the video. Is it inoperable because I’m using Gmail, or because I’m in Australia? Can’t understand why the video fails to materialize..

Thanks, Todd

As a former Navy man who served onboard a radar picket destroyer during the days of the cold war, and who spent months patrolling the Taiwan Straits between China and Taiwan, (formerly called Formosa), I can attest to the fact that China will not take any crap from us. Not back in the 1957 to 1960 era, not now.

While my ship conducted patrol duties in the Straits, we frequently heard the sound of “general quarters” which is the command to go to your battle stations. Of course the political atmosphere was volatile in those days, however, the Chinese refusal to be intimidated became obvious a few times. I can only speak for incidents I remember during my ship’s operations in the Straits. During one patrol, a Chinese jet “buzzed” our ship several times over a period of days. We even nicknamed that pilot Steve Canyon, the character in an old military cartoon. We had guns trained on the plane each time but had orders to hold fire unless he fired first.

We considered the pilot’s actions acts of harassment then, but I wonder what were the real reasons behind the pilot’s buzzing of our ship. We maintained the commander of the 7th fleet informed at all times. As far as I know, this took place while in international waters, these were trying times, there were other incidents which could have triggered a violent confrontation resulting in an international incident, but the fortunately the showdowns never came to more.

While I agree with what our Navy does, I am concerned that such incidents as the last one a few days ago may some day escalate and create a situation where neither country will back down how tragic that would be.

Hi Tony,

I agree with your assessment of this incident. Thanks for pointing it out to us.

With regard to current financial warfare, in your opinion, what defense will the Obama administration use toward China if they continue to artificially weaken their yuan AND decide to quit buying US long-term treasury instruments?

Hello Tony sagami
Nice articles about business s in asia doing well we are in australia how do we invest in your (weiss) etf,s etc and gold (commodity base )
China is protecting soverienity fair enough you failed to say that the chinese dismantled the spy plane as US admitted that (public record)into every component that it was made of labeled and detailed the exact function of each piece boxed them in chronological order and shipped them back we feel the same would happen to any sonar device over latest incident
cant see how low scale military invovment affects trade etc as it does not appear in any of your information on visits to companies in china or as to what is reccomended to invest

In my opinion, it would make it a lot easier to get the economy turned around if US foreign policy would transition from being the worlds leading outlaw agressor state and violator of international law and the UN charter to a policy of political tolorance and mutual respect in compliance with international law and treaty obligations.

Hurray, hurray … some of us are finally getting to the ‘real’ truth. The world IS controlled by a few hundred, maybe a thousand or so, ultra rich, ultra secretive families. For all who still wonder why and for those that can’t seem to understand what’s going on in the world. For all those still divided by petty differences. For all those that still have a partisan mindset. In other words; us vs. them and Dems vs. Repubs. Let me present the ultimate evidence of world wide manipulation and control. Written over 150 years ago, by the evil doers, for the evil doers, this document has been denied by them as bigotry. But after you read it and see that all the plans and proficies have come to fruition there can be no denying the truth. They never denied the existance of this document, only to say it is racist and bigoted. They never deny the contents thereof. For over 100 years it has been hidden and censored.
Every citizen of the planet needs to read this book. It will rock your world and you will never be or think the same afterwards. I’m not selling anything. Unlike so many web sites trying to get rich by informing us of what we should already be aware of. My only motive is too circulate this publication. To help the citizens of the US and the world in general to see and discern the truth. The REAL truth.
At the risk of disappearing or being ‘rubbed out’ I am revealing this to all the world. The name of this tome is “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion”. If you can’t find it with your browser, as I said, they want this kept under wraps, I will provide it free as a WORD or PDF document. Just request a copy from alanponelli@hotmail.com. I will promptly reply and attach said doc to my email.
Let’s see how many people have a quest for the truth or just like to hear their own gums slam together.

Dond
I am becoming worried that we may see The Soviet Union, China and Iran as the next Germany, Italy and Japan trying to rule the world by force. What really worries me is we have a idiot in the White House who is absoultely clueless as to what to do to fix anything. He reminds me of Neville Chamberlin who announced to the British parliment just before WWII after a meeting with Hitler that he had achieved peace in our time. Look at how Obama has been traveling around the world appologizing for our greatness. I am actually supprised that he did not appologize to Germany, Italy and Japan for making their defeat possible.
