Philippines: The Unpolished Diamond of Asia

Tony Sagami | January 16, 2010

This was my first trip to the Philippines, and I honestly wasn’t expecting much. Was I wrong! The 12th most populous country in the world is dotted with skyscrapers, BMWs, Starbucks, construction cranes, and luxury stores. The key is the country’s vibrant, energetic, low-cost, ENGLISH-SPEAKING labor force, which is the secret weapon that will drive the Philippine economy into prosperity.

View the video to learn the name of two Filipino stocks traded on U.S. exchanges that are ready to soar.

Best wishes,

Tony

G’day Tony and Sean,
I enjoy your U-tube presentations. I don’t have a cutting edge computer and probably my service provider has technical limits, but I often have to hit the ‘pause button’ to allow the incoming stream to catch up with the screen, if you see what I mean. The thought occurred to me that I don’t really need to have visual signal unless you show a graph. If you can give me the option to stream only sound, then I’m sure your presentations would go more smoothly. Keep up the good work.

As a Geologist I lived in the Philippines for 7 years (1957-1963) traveling throughout the numerous Philippine islands, working as a minerals and oil explorer. Between 1963 and 1972 I lived in several Asian and South American countries. In 1972, I moved back to Asia, and lived in Singapore for 7 years, but often traveled to the Philippine, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and other places. In 1976 I discovered the first large commercial oil production in the Philippines & my name became well known in that area. Pres & Mrs Marcos were close friends & In 1978 I was offered a job heading a large oil company, in the US, but seldom returned to Manila. My oil discoveries in the Philippines gave me a reputation with the well to do local stock brokers, other risk takers in mineral, oil exploration and other high risk ventures, but the well to do Filipino preferred to take small risks and left the big opportunities to foreign investors, who have done well but have missed the bonanza. My reputation is clean & worth using if you ever want to organize a local company, manage same, and make some real money without being corrupt. Local investors are available. If you have any interest Call me @ (575)-537-1685, in Mimbres, New Mexico.

The Philippines remains a fascinating place to do business, BUSINESS RISK IS WELL UNDERSTOOD, AND I WORKED IN MINERAL AND OIL EXPLORATION PRIMARILY, BUT BECAME WELL KNOWN in the banking, industrial, and risk sectors of the economy. The difference in my reputation & others is that I succeeded in business, kept a solid reputation for ethical conduct, and made others money!!! Allen Hatley Call, what do you have to loose ???

Dear Mr. Tony Sagami:

That’s my country of origin. This is the first time I read and hear about the Philippine Economy. I admit that the Filipinos are made to be open to positive change today. They have been suppressed by corrupt government for so long. They have been complaining about the Macapagal regime, and I hope they get a better president. The Filipino people value education a lot. In fact my Fililpino Students here in the US are shocked at the inferior education here in the US. One advantage the Filipinos have is English language is more a common language than the dialects. Education is conducted in English, and it has been the pleasure of many foreign teachers to want to stay in the Philippines for their love of education. There are more college and University Students in the PHilippines. But they are aware of the positive values of other countries, which they quickly pick up. Most of my family is over there. And I miss the their strong love for high professionalism and creativity. To me this is the underlying factor of the economic success of the Filipino people. My nephew is just graduating on the top of his class as an MBA economics and Finance. I have many engineers and musicians in my family and all of us have been educated to the highest level Doctoral and Masters and MBA… This is the underlying reality of the Philippines – education.

I beg to disagree sir, the Chinese in the Philippines who control a good portion of the businesses are mostly Philippine born and are not “Red” or “Communists”. Same goes for most ethnic Chinese in the rest of SE Asia.
But recently, due to the influx of newcomers from the mainland, a wedge started to develop between them and the local Chinese.

If you ever read the local Fil-Chinese newspapers you will see a lot of mudslinging from both sides since most ethnic chinese don’t like the way the mainlanders deal in business as they find them too aggressive and lack the modern western business ethics that they’ve come to expect.
